What is DBT?

DBT stands for dialectic behaviour therapy. By identifying and changing negative thinking patterns contributes to positive behaviour changes. It teaches how to cope with, change, and recognise unhealthy behaviours. Inclusive of accepting thoughts and feelings and being non-judgmental towards oneself.

For people looking for help with substance abuse and addiction, there are many approaches to treatment and therapy. Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is well established as an effective treatment for people with borderline personality disorders as well as depression and anxiety. Less well known is DBT’s effectiveness in helping people overcome addiction.

DBT is comprised of four modules: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills.  Each module helps people with addiction develop healthy behaviours and practices that will improve emotional health and decrease the chances of relapse.

How can we help?

At Lovelong House, we have developed a unique four-week DBT Skills program to help our clients gain the skills needed to enable them to develop a more healthy way of coping with their emotions, along with relapse prevention and continued recovery. Each client will also be provided with an easy to follow DBT handbook, to allow them to further develop their DBT practice after treatment. This will also aid the reflection process during the Life-Long weekly aftercare support program and the 4 Week Lovelong Addiction Program.

During a stay at Lovelong house, each client will be guided through each of the four DBT modules.  Compared to other rehab facilities, the groups are lower in numbers so each client has the time, space and attention to fully understand each skill and to work out which skills are the most effective for their recovery from addiction. DBT does not conflict with the more traditional recovery models and can be used in conjunction with the highly popular and effective 12 Step approach.

DBT is a proven, practical therapeutic model to treat all types of addiction, including alcohol abuse, prescription drug abuse, cocaine addiction, gambling addiction, as well as helping with depression and anxiety.
